It is believed that the origin of the name Sacavém is the Arabic etym šâqabî, meaning “near” or “neighbor” (probably from the city of Lisbon), through a corruption in Šaqaban; the name would eventually have been Latinized as Sacabis, and through the accusative form Sacabem (relatively similar to the term used by Muslims) the modern term Sacavém would have been reached. There are, however, other theories about the origin of the toponym.

Located at the crossroads of the paths that, coming from the North and East, headed towards Lisbon, Sacavém was present in countless moments in the History of Portugal.
An ancient settlement, there was a bridge in Sacavém during Roman times that remained at least until the 16th century (according to the account of Francisco de Holanda). From the time of the Moorish occupation, the toponym of Arabic origin (شقبان, Šaqabān) apparently remained; Immediately after the capture of Lisbon by the Christians, in 1147, a battle appears to have taken place here (the Battle of Sacavém), now commonly considered legendary.

On June 4, 1997, Sacavém finally saw its value and potential recognized, having been elevated to city status through law no. 45/97. Months later, the Vasco da Gama Bridge was inaugurated, connecting Sacavém to Montijo, and became a landmark in the city's urban landscape.
