Benfica began as a peasant village in the Saloia region. With them, some religious orders also settled in the territory.
In the 15th century, it was promoted to the seat of the Lisbon Term, being granted two private judges. It was also at that time that three important Brotherhoods were established: Nossa Senhora do Amparo, Santo António and São Sebastião.
In the 18th century, there began to be a strong attraction of new wealthy classes, seduced by the landscape, who settled on farms.
In the 19th century, connections with public transport appeared and the city witnessed exponential growth.

With the extinction of the Lisbon Term in 1852, the territory of Benfica was first integrated into the new municipality of Belém and, later, in 1886, it was divided. The outer part of the new Estrada da Circunvalação de Lisboa is integrated into Oeiras (like Benfica (Extramuros), currently the nucleus of the municipality of Amadora) and the inner part is integrated into Lisbon, giving rise to the current parish.

The city of Lisbon continued to grow rapidly, which was reflected in the increasing urbanization of the parish. From the 1950s to the 1990s of the 20th century, the population tripled from 17,843 inhabitants to around 50,000 inhabitants.
In 1959 the territory was divided again and gave rise to the parish of São Domingos de Benfica.
More recently, alongside the growing number of buildings, there has been a decrease in the resident population, not only due to aging but also due to the migration of younger inhabitants to the outskirts. [by wikipedia]
