Benfica started out as a village of peasants from the saloia region. With them, some religious orders also settled in the territory.

The outer part of the new Estrada da Circunvalação de Lisboa is integrated in Oeiras (like Benfica (Extramuros), currently being the current nucleus of the municipality of Amadora) and the inner part is integrated in Lisbon, giving rise to the current parish.
