The Parish of Olivais was created on May 6, 1397, by the Archbishop of Lisbon, D. João Anes, and confirmed by a bull of July 1, 1400, by Pope Bonifácio IX.
The formation of the new ecclesiastical unit was made with lands from the Term of Lisbon. Much earlier, however, the same lands belonged to the outskirts of the city, beyond Chelas, with Marvila of the Moorish mosques in possession of the bishopric since 1149; and, presumably, to the parish of Sacavém, established in the 12th century, perhaps on the sites of Marcos, Encarnação and Portela. Vague and oscillatory limits.
Donated to the capital in 1385, by D. João I, in reward for services rendered to the nation and royalty, this Term of Lisbon was more or less condensed as follows: «all the territory of the kingdom comprised between the Atlantic Ocean, on the west; the same ocean and river Tagus, in the south; the same river to the east; and limited to the north, perhaps, by the Alcabrichel river, on the ocean side, and by the Ota river, on the Tagus side». Soon, consequently, the area of the future parish would come under the municipal administrative and police jurisdiction of the city. This situation lasted until the 19th century.
Reproduction of the primitive area of the parish of Olivais.
If it was favorable to Lisbon, the Mestre de Avis donation would have displeased grantees with assets incorporated in it. At least the fact occurred with D. Nuno Álvares Pereira, lord of the reguengos of Sacavém, Unhos, Frielas and Charneca, who appealed to the monarch. But, by letter of sentence dated April 13, 1429, the king sensibly faced the claim of the great soldier harmonizing the respective interests: "we judge that the said city acts the jurisdictions of the said places liuremente, and husse dellas without embargo of the letters of the donations shown on the part of the said earl (stable), and notwithstanding what. on his part he said".
