Luz was, in the 18th century, an important attraction in the parish of Carnide. In 1852, the parish of Carnide was integrated into the newly created municipality of Belém. Thirty-three years later, in 1885, it became part of the municipality of Lisbon again. At the end of the 19th century, the construction of two ceramic factories on the outskirts of the villages, as well as the installation of factories in neighboring parishes, boosted the economy and encouraged the settlement of workers in Carnide. Where at that time the Quinta dos Inglesesinhos, a community of Irish Catholic friars, stood since 1983 the Secondary School of Vergílio Ferreira.
In the 20th century, agricultural habits combined with the rural exodus left many farms abandoned. This led to the beginning of intense urbanization in the area.
